Daily rant! HP Scanjet G4050 vs Vuescan

I finally got a scanner, something I've been wanting to get for a long time.

The only mid end scanner available in Brazil is the G4050, Epson doesn't sell here and Canon only sells low end scanners.

It's hellish overpriced due to zero competition, btw.

I'm considering the G4050 a mid end scanner, but it has some high end features but these severely diminish the scanning speed, for full usage of the features it must do three passes, 6 color scanning takes two and a third pass with infrared for dust and scratches.

In my research before buying the thing, I became aware of the lameness that HP packed in the software and how everyone is vouching for Vuescan as a solution to this problem.

Great, got the thing and HP soft really blows badly, can't get the thing to work on my quicksilver 2002 and took close to a week before I could settle with a USB arrangement that made it work with a PC.

Load vuescan up and to my surprise it doesn't do 6 color scanning, no second pass, zero, nada, my scanner reduced to a cheap variation of itself

Can't believe no one but me noticed that huge flaw.

Vuescan isn't alone in this, there isn't a single 3rd party scan soft that fully supports the G4050 and it's proprietary scanning 3 passes mess.

I'm sticking with HP soft, it's bad but offers way better scans.

edit:

I got the device working on the mac, it needs dedicated access, any resource sharing and it hangs.
